Leveraging Innovative Technology for Safer Surgical Procedures.

Using X-rays in surgical procedures can significantly benefit surgeons but also expose healthcare teams to harmful radiation levels. Studies have shown that healthcare workers in operating rooms are at risk of developing cancer due to prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation. As such, there has been a rising need for surgical technology that can navigate complex blood vessels without harming healthcare providers.

A team of researchers from Hanyang University in Seoul has developed the I-RAMAN robot in response to this challenge. This untethered surgical device can perform tunneling surgeries while being guided by magnets externally. Unlike traditional surgical procedures that require physical contact, the I-RAMAN robot operates autonomously by creating a 3D map of the patient’s blood vessels using the software. This critical component allows for precision and accuracy during procedures, increasing the likelihood of success.

The I-RAMAN robot has completed eight successful pig surgeries, showcasing its effectiveness in surgical operations. As a result, the Hanyang University team is now seeking to apply for clinical trials to test the robot’s efficacy in human clinical settings. The potential benefits of the I-RAMAN robot extend beyond just improving surgical outcomes; it also minimizes the risk of radiation exposure to healthcare providers and enhances the overall safety of the surgical room.

The development of untethered surgical devices like the I-RAMAN robot represents an innovative approach to surgical technology, revolutionizing the way surgical procedures are conducted. By leveraging modern technologies like magnets and 3D mapping, this advanced surgical technology can potentially transform the healthcare industry for years to come.
